Optimze ED Boarding

Anticipate where boarded patients need to be, sooner. With Choreo-ED, care teams are notified of likely throughput decisions to better prepare the patient flow, ensuring a smoother progression to the next level of care.

Inpatient boarding can nearly double the cost of care.

In 2022, the average time patients spent boarding in the emergency department (ED) was 190 minutes. While physical bed availability directly influences boarding, prolonged waits often indicate constrained resources, impacting staff capacity and increasing overall length of stay (LOS). By addressing patient flow inefficiencies, hospitals can significantly improve resource allocation, efficiency and decision-making, leading to a substantial reduction in ED boarding times.

We focus on ED throughput to reduce boarding and improve care delivery.

Choreo-ED enhances throughput efficiency by helping care teams proactively coordinate patient care. When a patient enters the ED, Choreo-ED starts integrating longitudinal patient data with real-time, information encompassing labs, medications and orders to anticipate the likelihood of admission.  Identifying these cases sooner allows care teams to make informed decisions about the next step in patient care, resulting in downstream time and resource savings.

Proactive resource planning to improve emergency department throughput.

ED boarding compromises the wellbeing of both patients and clinicians. In a recent study, clinicians reported boarding to be a high contributor to team burnout, particularly due to a lack of knowledge share, training and resource planning.

Our solution serves as an additionnot replacement to your care team. By noting what is likely to come, care teams can better utilize resources and keep patients flowing through the ED. For example, when a patient with a recent history of MRSA and likelihood of admission enters the ED, the admitting team is notified by Choreo-ED hours in advance. This lead time allows them to make special accommodations, like reserving an isolation bed that may have been given to a lower-risk patient.

Reduce Patient LOS

In recent years, the increase in ED boarding times has been named “its own public health emergency.” Boarding can increase patient wait times across the board, increasing the median length of stay for all patients, even ones being discharged, due to a heavier cognitive load for the clinical staff.

Choreo-ED reduces total boarding time, anticipating disposition decisions to help care teams allocate beds and initiate discharge planning further in advance.

Decrease boarding, improve care delivery.

When patients don’t receive the care they need, they look for care elsewhere. Incidents like these can put patients at a significant health risk, increase cost of care down the line and impact hospital quality metrics and revenue. Choreo-ED helps care teams deliver care more efficiently, reducing patient safety risks and left without being seen (LWBS) cases.
